Let me tell you something: there's a certain satisfaction that comes from tackling a home improvement project yourself.

That's exactly why I decided not to call an electrician and install my own LED bathroom mirror.

Sure, the old mirror was functional but lacked certain features I was looking for.  I explored various websites selling bathroom mirrors and found the Royal Bathrooms LED mirror range to be impressive.

You can  visit their website to see all the options they can offer. Additionally, If like me you’re feeling inspired to take control of your own home improvements, then take this blog as a guide on your mission to  transform the bathroom with a glowing new mirror.

Why DIY an Illuminated Mirror?

Before you start, let's discuss why you should go through the trouble of DIY.

Here are a few reasons for it.

  • Savings: Hiring an electrician to install an LED bathroom mirror can cost you a considerable amount of money. You can save this money by installing a mirror on your own.
  • The Thrill of DIY: There's a certain satisfaction in creating something beautiful and functional yourself. Trust me, the compliments will roll in!

But you must remember that DIY is not for everyone. You can install an  LED illuminated mirror in case there is a power outlet available to connect the mirror. If you need to create it by connecting the wires to the main source then it is better to leave it for the professionals. On top of that you should have the skills and knowledge to do it yourself.

Before We Dive In: A Beginner's Disclaimer

Now, I'm no master carpenter, but I am a huge DIY enthusiast. This project is perfect for beginners who are comfortable with some basic tools and following instructions. That being said, safety first! If you're unsure about anything involved in it, enlist the help of a qualified electrician.

Gather The Supplies First!

Here's what you'll need to create your very own illuminated masterpiece:

  • Mirror: Choosing the right size is important. Ideally, your mirror should have a frame or rim creating a ledge for the LED strip lights.
  • LED Strip Lights: Look for water-resistant, low-voltage LED strip lights with an adhesive backing. You should also consider the colour temperature (warm white, cool, white, etc).
  • Power Supply: Your LED mirror will come with a power supply to transform household current into the lower voltage needed for your LED light. You must ensure the one you have or come with.

This transforms household current into the lower voltage needed for your LED lights. Make sure it's compatible with your chosen lights.

  • Wire Cutters & Strippers: For electrical connections.
  • Scissors: To cut the LED strip lights (at designated spots only!).
  • Cleaning Supplies: Isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth for prepping the mirror's surface.
  • Tape: Painter's tape is great for marking placement and protecting surfaces.
  • Drill & Drill Bits: For some projects (we'll discuss this later).
  • Optional: Depending on your design, you might need additional materials like wood for framing or frosted window film for a diffused light effect.

Step-by-Step Process

Once everything is in place you can now start the actual installation process.

1: Prepare Mirror: First, remove any dirt or debris that might hinder the adhesive of the LED strip lights on the back. Use the isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloth for

2: Layout Planning: Decide where you want the LED lights placed. Typically, they go around the back of the mirror, but you can get creative! Mark the placement with the painter's tape.

3: Installation Process: Now comes the installation part, simply follow the manufacturer’s and carefully peel back of the adhesive back of the adhesive backing of the LED strip insight lights strips a little at a time and stick them not the marked area.

4: Wall Mounting: For someone directly mounting the mirror on the wall, their first thing will be to find a stud using a stud finder and drill holes for mounting it. Be careful about keeping the power supply and excess wires away behind the mirror before hanging it.

5: Connecting the Power Supply: As we are talking about LED mirrors, there will be connections to a power supply. You will need to connect the wires using the wire strippers and connectors supplied with the mirror.

6: Testing: Testing. Before finalizing the setup, you should plug the mirror in the power supply and test it. Ensure everything works as intended.
